Humility, Humility, Humility

walking-on-beachThe greatest theologian, Augustine said, “If you ask me what is the first precept of the Christian religion I will answer, first, second, and third, Humility.”

Psalms 8:3-5 (p. 867) tells us that mankind is really nothing when we look into the universe.  We cannot see but a fraction of the sky even with the greatest of all telescopes.  And God created it all.  So, we should ask, who is mankind to question God about anything?

He does not want anyone to boast but to be humble souls in all that we do.  Understand Isaiah 57:15 states that everyone in heaven is a humble soul. Therefore, to be haughty, full of ourselves, arrogant, or self-righteous means that our egos blocks out God.  And, it means, we cannot be pleasing to God when we want to show ourselves more than what we really are.

What God wants is stated in Micah 6:8-9 where He names three important attributes for all Christians to have: to do what is right, to love mercy, and to walk (meaning to live) humbly with God.  However, keep in mind, if you think you are wise in your own eyes then know that you will not listen to wisdom (v. 9).  The greatest wisdom is from God and not listening to Him is the greatest of all types of foolishness.

Not to be forgotten is that our Lord Christ Jesus suffered a death of a criminal (Philippians 2:5-8), washed the feet of His disciples, and served many by healing, teaching, and loving all He found (Mark 10:41-45).  We need to be like Jesus and be humble always.
