Mustard Seeds, Yeast, and Doorways
Luke 13:18-27
Being in the majority in our society tends to say a great deal. The more people that watch, attend, or agree on something the more pressure there seems to be to conform to what is viewed then as the most “popular” place or philosophy of the day.
Popularity in public opinion doesn’t necessarily mean the best informed or the wisest choice. Rather, it means that many people believe or act in a similar manner.
In terms of religions of the world the Muslim has the largest numbers. Then again, the majority of the world either believes in no god or many gods that aren’t defined. Within the United States the majority of people or 59% (as of a Gallup poll with 2003 results) do not attend church on a regular basis.
God has told us many things throughout the historical record of those who faithfully follow His laws or directions. First, that the number who are truly faithful to Him will be very few. Never throughout the Scriptures were those fully faithful a God in the majority.
If we think back on various stories throughout the Bible then from beginning to end there is only a dedicated few at any time who represents God. For instance, Noah built his ark with only his family believing there would be a flood. Jonah went (reluctantly, too) to no less than the capital city of the Assyrians (known for their horrendous torture techniques). Or, Jesus in the Jerusalem, which was the capital city of the Jewish nation, that the majority of both Roman and Jewish rule sentenced Him to death. Or, when the apostle Paul visited such hostile regions to Christianity among the super powers of Rome and Greece before he was put to death. Needless to say, even today there are many parts of the world were Christians are greatly outnumbered and their lives are equally at risk as those who lived in Bible times.
If we keep in mind that when God is on our side and we are steadfast in obedience and love to Him then the numbers and percentages do not matter. Therefore, do not be intimidated or allow popularity to guide you in finding truth or what you strive. Rather, look to the Lord in all that you do, please Him, and your life will be blessed both now and through eternity.
